Scoliosis

I revised my profile to show as haveing scoliosis, however I would like to be clear that it is my wife who has Kyphosis and mild scoliosis and not me personally. I wanted others to understand the reason for my being a member of this group and why am seeking support and information on the subject.

Hi Michael, I probably shouldn't make assumptions about the U.S medical system without having any personal experience. I've just watched a few doco's where people drive to Canada or Mexico to get Meds & ambulances pass by certain hospitals that aren't covered by the patients insurance. I'm glad to hear you are happy with your current system (while it lasts!). I'm currently under the public system here. Private health insurance is just to expensive, esp with gaps & excesses. In Aus we have to purchase our health insurance ourselves, I haven't heard of any employers here providing health cover (as I think is the case in the States?). I'm not currently able to work so that's neither here nor there for me. I mentioned that to my GP that bracing has helped with pain control in others with scoliosis, so he's going to bug the surgeon for me.

Hi Michael, to me a brace for adults seems to some make sense, esp if it is helping with your wife's pain, & I think scoliosis becomes as much as a muscular problem as a skeletal one. @ 31 I'm obviously no longer growing, yet my scoliosis has (& is) getting worse (my cob angle has increased from 51 degrees in 2001 & is now 60 degrees). I'm on ridiculous amounts of Oxycontin, Valium (for muscle spasms) & anti-inflammatories etc just so I can get out of bed. The Dept of Health won't increase my meds, yet they dont offer any alternative. Although I think I'm very lucky to live in Aust as we have Medicare which pays for Dr's appts, surgery (I'm on a 6 month waiting list) & a fantastic PBS system where the government buys the meds from the drug companies & subsidies them to the public. Because I'm on a disability pension I only pay around $5-$6 per script until I've bought approx A$280 of meds then it's all free. I dont know how you guys in the States manage financially (even with insurance). The down side here is that the government decides how much pain you're in (or not) & as I mentioned I cant find a Dr who believes in bracing, even in the private system.

Hi Michael, I've uploaded some very unflatering photos of my back. Surgery has been the only option offered to me, & I'm now on the waiting list. They don't tend to even offer kids braces in Aus-they 'd rather cut you up. I'm going to try to find someone here who prescribes a brace, if it doesn't work surgery is still an option. I just wish Dr's here would look into more non-surgical methods.
